Double Helix
Double Helix is a duet for Alto Saxophone and Violin. I loved the juxtaposition of the two sounds, and the ability of the of the violin to play double-stops to add a harmonic element. The flexibility of the two instruments also allows me to create layers within one instrument so that it sounds as though there are multiple voices in a single part. The piece plays around with several motives with two extremely rhythmic melodies that intertwine around each other. Incorporating slap tongue and multi-phonics in the Saxophone and double-stops and pizzicato in the Violin, the pieces tries to draw out multiple textures and sounds from the two instruments. The performance in the youtube video to the right is performed by Jana Przywarová on Violin and Lukáš Kolek on Saxophone. There are several changes that I made to the score since this recording, but their amazing performance still gives a great idea as to how the piece should sound.
